Nebraska monument marks wildflower week

Taking a walk on the wild side is easy during June at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

The monument, 22 miles south of Harrison, Neb., along Highway 29, celebrates Nebraska Wildflower Week (June 3-9) by offering a wildlife seminar at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 9. A botanist will lead the session, with wildflower walks to follow. Several artists will be on hand to demonstrate how to sketch the plants. Visitors also may take the walks themselves, relying on plant identification signs placed by Lil Morava, visitor-use assistant at the monument.

The monument charges an entrance fee of $3 per person or $5 per vehicle. You may also use national park passes, golden age passes or golden access passes, as well as the tri-park pass including Scotts Bluff National Monument and Fort Laramie National Historic Site.

The visitor-center museum is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The two trails are open until dusk.
