There's a museum in every town
- Adams Museum, 54 Sherman St., Deadwood, phone: 605-578-1714. Summer hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, May 1 to Sept. 30. Exhibits introduce visitors to the legends of Deadwood and the natural history of the Black Hills. Web site: www.AdamsMuseumAndHouse.org.

- Anna Miller Museum, Newcastle, Wyo., phone: 307-746-4188. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Wyoming National Guard cavalry barn, built in the 1930s, holds a diverse collection of area history. Web site: www.newcastlewyo.com/anna.html
- Everything Prehistoric and Black Hills Museum of Natural History, Hill City, phone: 605-574-3919 or 605-574-4289. Hours: June 1 to Sept. 1, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call for off-season times. The museum features Stan, the world's most complete male T. rex, along with the largest displayed collection of Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons and skulls (cast and real) in the world. - Black Hills Mining Museum, 323 W. Main St., Lead, phone: 605-584-1605. Hours: May 15-Sept. 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour a simulated underground level of the former Homestake Gold Mine, created by former miners, for a comprehensive look at both early day and modern underground mining. - Custer County 1881 Courthouse Museum, Custer, phone: 605-673-2443. Open May 15 through Sept. 30, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays; 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Museum covers area history from the 1800s to the present. Exhibits include artifacts related to Gen. George Armstrong Custer and early settlers. Also view the 1875 Dr. Flick cabin in Way Park, the oldest building in the Black Hills. Web site: www.1881courthousemuseum.com.
- Days of '76 Museum, Deadwood, phone: 605-678-2872. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, mid-April through mid-October. The museum includes horse-drawn carriages and rodeo photographs and artifacts associated with Deadwood's annual Days of '76 parade and rodeo. - High Plains Western Heritage Center, Spearfish, phone: 605-642-WEST (9378). Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. The Heritage Center includes a five-state regional museum founded to honor the Old West pioneers and American Indians of the High Plains. Displays include Western art, artifacts and memorabilia. - Newell Museum, Newell, phone: 605-456-1310 or after hours 605-456-2804. Hours: May-September, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Also open by appointment. The facility features one of the state's largest collections of antique and collectible dolls, a restored one-room schoolhouse, history of the Belle Fourche Irrigation District and genealogy resources. - Old Fort Meade Calvary Museum, near Sturgis, phone: 605-347-9822. Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15-31; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 1 to Sept. 1; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 1-15. Open by appointment off-season. The museum tells the story of Fort Meade from 1878 to 1944 when it was demilitarized and turned over to the Veterans Affairs. Exhibits include historical letters from cavalry members involved in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, cavalry saddles and uniforms and American Indian artifacts. Web site: www.fortmeademuseum.org.

- Pioneer Museum, 300 N. Chicago, Hot Springs, phone: 605-745-5147. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, May 15 through Oct. 15. Located in a four-story sandstone schoolhouse constructed in 1893, the museum houses historical memorabilia donated by area residents. Exhibits feature Indian items, a Boy Scout display, pioneer history, Angostura Irrigation Project and more. Web site: www.pioneer-museum.com.
- Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, corner of Junction Avenue and Main Street, Sturgis, phone: 605-347-2001. Open daily year-round. The museum's mission is to collect the history of motorcycling, offering a variety of motorcycles, memorabilia, posters, photographs. Web site: www.sturgismuseum.com.
- The Journey Museum, 222 New York St., Rapid City, phone: 605-394-6923. Summer hours: Memorial Day to Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Journey Museum takes you on a trek through time, from the violent upheaval that formed the Black Hills more than 2.5 billion years ago to the continuing saga of the Western Frontier.
