40 years at Red Cloud
Nation’s largest Indian art show celebrates anniversary.
Located in nearby Pine Ridge, the Heritage Center of Red Cloud Indian School features an excellent collection of Lakota tribal art dating from the 1870s to the 21st century. This superb collection features beadwork, porcupine quillwork and Leader Shirts. The collection also includes prize-winning paintings, graphics and sculptures from the annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show, a nationally recognized competition for Native American artists. The gift shop features local Lakota handmade arts and tribal arts and literature.
While visiting the Heritage Center, take time for a leisurely walk around the beautiful campus. Overlooking the school is the Holy Rosary Cemetery, burial site of Red Cloud, the great Oglala Chief.
In the newly renovated Heritage Center, you may visit a historic replica of a 1940s classroom.
The art show show is the largest of its kind in the nation, with its collection on display year-round at Red Cloud Heritage Center.
The show, featuring all new works each year, is open seven days a week from the first Sunday in June through the third Sunday in August. Visitors and art collectors from across the U.S. and many foreign countries are attracted to the show each year. All pieces in the annual art show are for sale, providing an excellent market for Native American artists.
