Welcome to Edgemont, South Dakota

Edgemont

Edgemont (population 834) is so named because of its location at the edge of the Black Hills. The town was incorporated on April 22, 1895, with Al Herrick, head of the Edgemont Improvement Company, serving as its first mayor.

In the late 1800s, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended its lines into the area, crossing the Cheyenne River in 1889. Edgemont was made a division point in 1905, with rail connections to the north and south and lines to the east and west. Around 1900, the city developed into a great market for horses, and by the early 1900s, many homesteaders moved into the surrounding rangeland.

Edgemont is an economic and business center for a large ranching area and also is seeing an increase in tourists, particularly along the Mickelson Trail. Game, Fish & Parks is providing materials for a new lighted, cement-floor trail shelter in Edgemont’s city park, which was completed in 2002.

In 2001, Edgemont Theater renovated the city’s old sale barn and now presents melodramas, along with dinner, in June and July.
