Deadwood receives national award for historic preservation project
The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has selected the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission as a 2008 Award of Merit winner by the Leadership in History awards committee. According to a news release, this award recognizes the work for the Scenes in the Black Hills: Glass Transparencies Project, a two-and-half-year conservation project focusing on 13 hand-tinted glass transparencies of Deadwood. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards is the nation’s most prestigious competition for recognition of achievement in state and local history. » read more

The South Dakota State Historical Society has created an atlas detailing the historic Fort Pierre-to-Deadwood Trail. Archives staff created the Ft. Pierre-Deadwood Trail Historical Atlas using survey plat maps from the 1880s and 1890s. » read more

Conservators survey Clowser Collection at Days Of ’76 Museum
A team of conservators from across the country visited the Days of ’76 Museum last week as part of an initiative to provide proper care for the Clowser Collection. Deborah Long, conservator from the Nebraska Historical Society’s Gerald Ford Conservation Center in Omaha, worked at the museum April 1 – 3 to conduct a detailed conservation survey on objects in the collection including the General Crook’s scout James Twiss’ jacket, firearms and weaponry, artifacts from Deadwood’s Chinatown, saddles and tack, pioneer household goods and furniture, mining equipment, furniture, sculptures, stuffed animal specimens and more. Long examined the artifacts and advise the museum board and staff on procedures necessary to stabilize and care for them, along with an estimated cost for that care. » read more
