Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the second largest reservation in the U.S., is located in southwestern South Dakota on the Nebraska state line. The reservation encompasses 4,353 square miles and has an enrolled tribal membership of 43,698.

For tourist information, contact:

  • Oglala Sioux Tribe Parks and Recreation Department: 605-455-2584.
  • Pine Ridge Area Chamber of Commerce: 605-455-2685 or www.pineridgechamber.com. The chamber has information on fishing, hiking, camping, sightseeing and horseback riding. It also has information on guided tours.

Some of the attractions and events available are:

  • The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School. Call 605-867-5491 for the museum and gift shop. Burial of the great Oglala chief Red Cloud is on the school grounds.
  • Wounded Knee Visitors Center. Call 605-867-2228.
  • Oglala Nation Powwow and Rodeo is scheduled for the fourth weekend in August. Call 605-455-2685.
  • The Porcupine Pow Wow is held Labor Day weekend in Porcupine.
  • There is a list of area pow wows on the Pine Ridge chamber Web site.
  • Prairie Wind Casino, near Oelrichs, offers gaming, entertainment and dining. Call 1-800-705-WIND or go online to www.prairiewindcasino.com.
